Pharmaceuticals/ Biotechnology/ Biopharmaceuticals
Most traditional pharmaceutical drugs are relatively simple molecules that have been found primarily through trial and error to treat the symptoms of a disease or illness. Biopharmaceuticals are large biological molecules like proteins and these usually target the underlying mechanisms and pathways of a malady; it is a relatively young industry. They can deal with targets in humans that may not be accessible with traditional medicines.
The modern biotechnology industry has been instrumental in developing molecular diagnostic devices that can be used to define the target patient population for a given biopharmaceutical.

We are keenly aware of the fact that in this market, private equity investing in biopharmaceutical projects is first and foremost a 'people business' and we work by the fundamental philosophy and principle that our word is our bond.
Modern biotechnology can be used to manufacture existing medicines relatively easily and cheaply. the first genetically engineered products were medicines designed to treat human diseases (ex: synthetic insulin). Genomic knowledge of the genes involved in diseases , disease pathways, and drug-response sites are expected to lead to the discovery of thousands more new targets.
When a biopharmaceutical is developed, the company will typically apply for a patent, which is a grant for exclusive manufacturing rights. This is the primary means by which the developer(s) of the drug can recover the investment cost for development of the biopharmaceutical. The patent laws in the US and Europe differ somewhat on the requirements for a patent, with the European requirements are perceived as more difficult to satisfy.
Generally, there is rather strict control exerted over the commercial distribution of a pharmaceutical product, including biopharmaceuticals. approval can require several years of clinical trials, including trials with human volunteers. Even after the drug is released, it will still be monitored for performance and safety risks.
